Park Burn Natural Area Management

Notice

Pizzo & Associates Ltd. will be conducting a controlled burn of a natural area within a quarter mile of your business or residence. Prescribed fire is an integral part of the ecological restoration of natural areas. This prescribed burn has been permitted by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and your local fire department. Every step of the process is supervised by a Certified Prescribed Burn Manager who has been qualified by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Pizzo & Associates Ltd. has safely completed hundreds of prescribed burns throughout the Great Lakes region. The native plant communities of Northern Illinois require the reintroduction of fire in order for native flora and fauna to thrive.

Due to the highly variable nature of weather, specific burn dates cannot be set far in advance. The prescribed burn will take place during burn season, between the date this flyer is delivered and the end of the following calendar year. Burn season is typically between October 20th and May 1st.

The burn will be on a day when the dormant/dead vegetation and leaves are dry (i.e., not covered in snow or during rain) and when the temperature is at or above freezing. Additionally, there will not be a burn if the Illinois EPA Bureau of Air - Air Quality Index is forecast to be above 100. Each burn generally lasts a few hours between 9:30am and 5:30pm, with little or no inconvenience to neighboring property owners. To avoid the smell of smoke, keep your windows closed during the burn. If you have a severe respiratory issue you may want to make arrangements to leave the area for the duration of the burn.

If you  have questions or would like to be notified in advance of the burn, please call our Prescribed Fire Hotline: 815-495-2300 and leave a message at extension 122 with your name, phone number, street addres and city, subdivision or community, and a short description of your question or concern.

For more information, please call Pizzo & Associates at 815-495-2300 ext. 122.
