Everyone Plays at the Al Hattendorf Community Center!

There truly is something for everyone at the Hattendorf Center with new additions to the playground. The existing playground is being expanded to provide more accessible features for all to play and enjoy the park.  The picnic shelter, story garden, trike track for wheeled toys, sensory garden and grass play areas make this a multi-generational, family destination.

The Park Board listened to the concerns of local residents and began the process to make the playground even more accessible and inviting for people of all abilities.  Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) staff shared that in 2015 over 500 Elk Grove Village residents with varying abilities accessed their programs at the Elk Grove Park District. Many people think of mobility as the major type of disability but it is actually cognitive or social/emotional (sensory) that effects more people, especially children.  Outdoor play helps relieve stress, develop better physical skills and improves overall health.

The additional play area includes activities that provide physically challenging events as well as supportive, interactive and social play. The new equipment complements the tree house and wheeled toy track installed in 2010. The colors complement the buildings, picnic shelter and gardens.

Both play areas and the surrounding spaces will be fenced and gated to help protect children. Gates will be located at both parking areas and at the Ridge Avenue sidewalk. Only registered service animals will be allowed inside.  Patrons are asked to close and latch the gates at all times and please leave pets at home.

Anyone will be able to use the swing, super nova (spinning ring), overhead climber, group see-saw or sway fun rider. A hand cycling station provides an opportunity for aerobic exercise and fun games.  The area will be protected with an accessible, poured in place rubber surface. A swinging bench nearby reminds us of the porch swings and long lazy afternoons.

The Al Hattendorf Community Center is truly a facility for all ages, from pre-school to active adults. There is something for everyone to come and play and enjoy and meet new friends.

The playground renovation is expected to be completed by mid- October. Join us for a celebration on Saturday, October 22, at 2:00pm to welcome everyone to play together.
