June Plant of the Month

Here is a low maintenance plant that does well in full sun and can tolerate partial shade. The Amsonia plant has delicate star-like blue flowers and thread-like leaves. Amsonia plants are not bothered by pests or insects aiding in its low maintenance.

Amsonia plants grow best in moist fertile soil, and can tolerate wet soils for short periods. After the plant flowers you can shear back ⅓ of the plant to keep it compact. The plants are slow growing and after 6 years of growth and jealousy from your neighbors, these plants can be divided in the spring and shared with others.

Amsonia is a favorite here at the Elk Grove Park District. The photo (taken by our horticulturist, Gina DelMedico) is from a pollinator garden at Fountain Square park. Look for the Yellow Arrow sign pointing out the plant of the month in our parks.
